NECK LIFT

INTRODUCTION TO THE NECK LIFT
A neck lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to reposition the muscles, the neck structures and the skin in the neck area in men and women who are experiencing signs of jawline and neck aging, with the goal to restore youthful contours of the neck and jawline.
As a result of his extensive training in face and neck lift techniques both at Emory University and at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in Manhattan, Dr. Szczerba’s neck lift procedures are based upon proven techniques rather than “the newest thing” on TV and in ads. He takes no shortcuts in his procedures. A neck lift is a very complex procedure that requires the skill of an expert plastic surgeon like Dr. Szczerba, particularly because, unlike other parts of the body, your face and neck are there for all to see.
GOOD CANDIDATES FOR A NECK LIFT
Healthy men and women experiencing signs of neck aging such as drooping jowls, sagging or “turkey” neck are appropriate for a neck lift. A neck lift is often combined with a face lift because, if your neck and jowls are sagging, it’s highly likely that your facial muscles are sagging as well. In young patients who have a “full neck”, a neck lift can be designed to remove the fat in your neck, tighten the neck structures and hide the scars completely behind your ears!
Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Stefan Mark Szczerba will tailor your neck lift procedure to your needs. To help you visualize your anticipated outcome, Dr. Szczerba uses computer imaging to show you the anticipated results.
Total facial rejuvenation includes eye lift, brow lift, face lift and neck lift. Dr Szczerba will discuss all the options at your consultation in his plastic surgery office in Chicago, Rosemont or Hoffman Estates. He will decide, with you, which procedures will create the most desirable and natural final result.
HOW A NECK LIFT IS PERFORMED
Dr. Szczerba performs the neck lift under general anesthesia at a hospital or an accredited operating suite in Chicago, Rosemont or Hoffman Estates.
After anesthesia is started, incisions are placed under the chin and both in front of and behind the ear to accommodate the lifting of the neck area. The musculature of the neck area is lifted and repositioned and the skin of the neck is redraped to a more youthful contour. Sutures are carefully placed around the ear area so as to be least noticeable over time, and are generally hidden by the hair. Dr. Szczerba takes great care to ensure that he does not change the position of your earlobe (which results in “pixie ears”) or in the appearance of your ‘tragus” ”—the little bump on the front of your ear. Dr. Szczerba is known for his dedication to the small details like this.
RECOVERY FROM A NECK LIFT
Most patients recover fairly rapidly from Dr. Szczerba’s neck lift procedure. You will wish to take time from work and social activities for approximately one to two weeks because all patients inevitably have some bruising and swelling with any facial procedure. For neck lift surgery you will have a drain inserted into each side of the neck to remove excess fluid that your body makes while healing; this is generally removed in a day or two.
Our patients are instructed to wear a neck support garment or neck band which is a supportive garment to help contour the neck. Depending on the amount of correction needed, you may wear this jaw bra 24 hours a day while healing and then at night for up to six weeks.
Your neck lift can produce changes in your neck that will last for the rest of your life although, of course, you will continue to age. However, neck lift surgery combined with a careful diet and exercise and avoiding the known things that damage your skin such as the sun, alcohol, and smoking, can lengthen the effects.
